This website is an editorial component of Where We Are Now, a platform to deepen and amplify the discourse around an aesthetic and political practices in New York City.

Where We Are Now arose from an interest in sustaining the momentum that arose during the time of the 2008 presidential election. We believe this energy is not specific to the particular campaigns but is part New York’s diverse cultural tradition. The website attempts to create a space for artists, activists, and cultural practitioners to share ideas and resources.

Where We Are Now’s website has two main sections intended to provide a map of art and activism in New York: a Listings section where registered users can post events; and a Magazine of commissioned articles, the publication (with authors’ permission) of existing texts previously unavailable online, and moderated commentary.

Through evocative reportage and critical analysis, the journal advances time-based or short-term activities—from art performances to conferences to political demonstrations. The anticipated outcomes are to foster quality writing around creative activist work, to maintain communication among artists, activists and cultural practicioners, and to generate better organized and informed socially-engaged endeavors.
